Welcome to Skowhegan, Maine - Since 1823

A bustling, former mill town, Skowhegan has a big town vibe in a small town package. This gateway to Maine’s woodlands offers visitors trails to walk, bike and ski; peaks to hike; and the picturesque Kennebec to paddle and fish. To the Wabanaki, this place called “Skowhegan '' was a crossroad where the Kennebec River was a travel way. Today, visitors enjoy strolling among historic downtown boutiques and shops then dine where locally sourced organic produce is part of the cuisine or sampling from several craft breweries. Are you passionate about the arts? Follow the Langlais Art Trail where more than 20 sculptures and relief carvings by impressionistic folk artist, Bernard Langlais, are displayed. How about a first-run movie at The Strand, a restored historic venue housing three theaters!

Skowhegan celebrates the beauty of all her seasons with festivals and a community that thrives on being outdoors. Plan a visit to coincide with River Fest, Dinner in the Park, or a celebration of craft beers at Brew Fest set among a backdrop of the emerald greens of summer and sparkling sapphire blue Kennebec River. When hillsides are adorned in ruby red, bronze, and gold - tour a craft brewery, go apple picking, and marvel at the vibrant foliage in the hills beyond picturesque farm fields. As night arrives early in winter, meander among sparkling lights like diamonds and pearly snow cloaked storefronts in December during Small Business Saturday to get in a festive mood for the holidays. Skowhegan’s winter jewel is SnowFest, held every February and featuring cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, ice fishing, downhill kayak and box races, Ice Hole World Championship, and New England’s largest skijoring competition attracting more than 50 equine teams and thousands of spectators!
